Christie Davies Award (CDA)

Christie Davies (1941-2017), one of the founders of the International Society for Humor Studies and its president from 2007 to 2009, was a Professor of Sociology at the University of Reading, United Kingdom. His seminal works in the field of humor studies include the books “Jokes and Targets” (2011); “The Mirth of Nations” (2002); “Jokes and their Relation to Society” (1998); “Ethnic Humor around the World” (1990) and a very large number of articles.

The Christie Davies Award (CDA) aims to recognize exemplary graduate student work presented at ISHS Conferences on any topic within the area of social sciences or liberal arts disciplines.

In order to be eligible to the award, you must:

• be an ISHS student member working toward a masters or doctoral degree, or a recent PhD (doctorate after May 1, 2024)

• register for and attend the 2026 ISHS Conference

• submit an independently written conference paper (papers co-authored by an advisor are ineligible)

• an application letter indicating that you are competing for the CDA Award and a description of your research program within humor studies

• a curriculum vitae

• a completed conference paper plus abstract by May 30, 2026
